On June the 16th 2018 Fallon’s Angler returned with Chris Yates to the Sussex Levels to celebrate the start of the coarse season. I shot the film from dawn until dusk, as Chris tells the tale of Mr Green’s rod – a story that has taken fifty-nine years to be told.
The Sussex landscape evokes fond memories for Chris as he recalls an era of club match men, coach parties, large bream, and a particular young girl who he saw fishing almost six decades ago.
This film highlights what a day can bring when immersed in thought, the landscape and fishing, it is as Izaak Walton famously once wrote ‘the contemplatives man’s recreation.’
After reading the story in Fallon’s Angler I am looking forward to the film ! Especially as its filmed in Sussex .

Hello Nick- I remember Chris Yates’ story from the journal, too. That’s the side of cane rods I really love! I’m not a complete bamboo-head if I’m honest (I’m a total sucker for modern advertising and there’s always some shiny new Drennan or Greys float rod I’m dreaming of) but I get swept up with the romance of cane rods and their history. I’ve got two now for perch fishing. I don’t use them for any other fishing, if I’m honest. They seem to suit the big floats. Although I did buy a cane pike rod last year- the Allcocks ‘Water Wolf’ (!)- with a name like that, how could I not? Anyway, this trailer was magic- I really can’t wait for the film- Gazza

In truth Chris is not about cane rods, he is about a deep sense of knowing what is happening in the natural world. Rods…Alan Brown for me, do idea why!
